In August, Trico Electric Cooperative was honored to have Senator John McCain stop by Trico to speak to employees and their families. It was a memorable experience.
We are thankful to Senator McCain for his support on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Clean Power Plan (CPP). Senator McCain and his staff were instrumental in persuading the EPA to ease restrictions on carbon emissions in Arizona. The final rule of the CPP – while still a challenge to achieve – relaxes both the interim and final carbon emissions goals for Arizona.
We are still analyzing the rule and its impact. While it will certainly affect the cost of power we receive from both Arizona Electric Power Cooperative and Tucson Electric Power, on its face the final rule is a much better result than the preliminary proposal. The revised goals for Arizona appear to be substantially more feasible than the original plan, indicating that the EPA listened to our concerns.
We want to express our appreciation to members of the Arizona Congressional delegation and state legislators who supported us, as well as our Members, community leaders and others who generated postcards, emails and phone calls to the EPA.
