Charitable Trust helps students go on Odyssey of the Mind

One of the principles of the Trico Charitable Trust (TCT) is to help children and young people through support of our schools and other organizations that serve youth from preschool through high school.

The TCT proudly donated $1,000 to Ironwood Elementary School so their fifth grade Odyssey of the Mind team could compete in the World Finals competition held at Michigan State University.

The Arizona state champions finished 31st in their division of 60 competitors who represented teams from around the world. This was an excellent ranking for the school’s first trip to Worlds.

“Many thanks for the Trico Charitable Trust's support in helping our young students achieve beyond the classroom,” said Adele Roberts, Odyssey of the Mind coach at Ironwood. “This experience will be remembered by these young people for the rest of their lives.”

Odyssey of the Mind is an international problem solving competition that challenges students to solve problems using creativity and teamwork. This year’s “Runaway Train” problem required the students to create multiple self-propelled vehicles that run on a track and complete several obstacles. The students solved the problem on their own with no outside assistance from parents or teachers. The team then wrote a creative script to present their solutions. There was also a ‘think-on-your-feet’ component where students had to solve problems spontaneously.

“Our students competed very well in this event and are eager to earn their way to next year’s championship,” said Dr. Eric Abrams, principal at Ironwood. “This trip opened their minds to future opportunities in creative design and engineering. Thank you Trico for caring about our youth and our country. Together, we can make a difference.”
